Recover From the Holidays 50k

The Recover from the Holidays 50k is takes place every New Year's Eve in Huntsville at the John Hunt Cross Country Running Park in Huntsville. New Year's Eve 2011 marked the 17th annual running of the event. The race is always New Year's Eve, no matter the day of the week. This year, it fell on a Saturday.

The Huntsville Cross Country course is a 3 mile loop (really, it's more like a 1.5 mile out and back) on dirt trails with one significant hill. The course has a 1 mile and a 2 mile turnaround point. The RFH 50k does a 1 mile loop followed by 10 repeats of the 3 mile loop for 31 miles total. This year saw a record number of entrants and finishers, with 147 registrants and 81 finishers.

2011 RFH 50k Finisher's Award

The results are both at the RFH 50k website and the HTC Website. The overall winner was 47 year old local ultra running legend DeWayne Satterfield of Huntsville in 3:50:59, sporting a dress shirt and a tie for the whole run! The female winner was Tammy Tribett of Manassas, VA, in 4:25:30.

Rocket City Marathon

The 35th annual Rocket City Marathon was December 10, 2011 in downtown Huntsville. Many say that this is one of the best marathons in the country. Dink and Suzanne Taylor really really know exactly what is important to runners. There is a very high volunteer to runner ratio. There is enthusiastic crowd support. The course is very fast. And, beginning in 2010, the Rocket City Marathon offers pace teams sponsored by Nike and Fleet Feet in Huntsville. This is really a top notch race and it is an honor to have such a high quality event in our area. The weather was very good except for a stiff breeze from the north, which was in the face of the runners during the second half of the race.

Before I get to the results, I would like mention a very scary side story to the marathon. A race volunteer was seriously injured when he was struck by a car. He was crossing the street to begin working the aid station at about the 13.2 mile mark on Bailey Cove Road. When he stepped from the curb, he was struck and very seriously injured. The latest information I have is that he is in critical condition. Read more here. Our prayers are with him and his family that he will make a full recovery. The police, EMTs, and the race directors handled this emergency very well.

The overall winner was Daniel Kirwa of Searcy, AR by way of Kenya in 2:20:05. The female winner was also the female masters winner, Jen Hitchings of Sacramento, CA in 2:51:27. The masters winner was Scott Fanning of Lebanon, TN in 2:39:29. The top local finishers were Josh Whitehead in 2:31:37 and Candace Jacobs in 2:57:16. Jingle Bell Jog Results

The 2nd Annual Jingle Bell Jog was December 3, 2010 at Athens High School. This is one of 3 annual 5k races in Athens. The Jingle Bell Jog benefits the Athens High JROTC. The event grew from last year. The weather was perfect for running!

Tate Carden of Athens was the overall winner in 18:46. Lance Perry was the masters winner in 20:41. The overall female winner was Whitney Hollingsworth of Elkmont in 22:03. The masters female winner was Ruth VanZandt of Arab in 23:09.

The majority of the finishers were Limestone County finishers, so I'll direct you to the results instead of posting the Limestone county finishers here.

Huntsville Half Marathon

The 23rd annual Huntsville Half Marathon was Saturday, November 12, 2011. The weather was great, and there was strong participation from Limestone County runners. The overall winner was Josh Whitehead of Madison in 1:10:13. The female winner was Candace Jacobs of Huntsville in 1:21:53. Life Without Limits Half Marathon

The Life Without Limits Half Marathon was last Saturday, October 29, 2011, in Florence, AL. (Sorry for the tardiness in getting these results posted.) This event benefits United Cerebral Palsy of Northwest Alabama. By all accounts, this is a very well organized event. There is a good crowd, many good runners and many who are just there to support the cause. The course is described as fast and scenic. There is also a concurrent 5k race for those who aren't quite up to the 13.1 mile challenge of the half marathon.

The overall winner was Hirbo Hirbo of Florence in 1:16:12. The overall female winner was Sandy Lynch of Florence in 1:30:40. The masters winner was Stacey Lemay in 1:25:51. (Tim Vinson of Madison actually was the first finisher over 40 years old in 1:21:08, but he accepted the 2nd overall prize instead of the masters winner prize.) The masters female winner was Esther Sanders of Belden, MS, in 1:41:26.

Limestone County runners had a strong showing at this race, especially regulars at the Athens Sunday morning 10 mile run. Congrats to Mark Maclin (a 10 mile regular) for winning the 35-39 age group. Congrats to Danny Harrison (another 10 mile regular) for taking second in the 30-34 age group. Finally, congrats to Johnny Maplesden (yet another Sunday 10 mile runner) for taking third in the 40-44 age group. Spooktacular 5k

The Spooktacular 5k was held this past Saturday October the 29th.

Here is the race as described by North Alabama Runner's own Eric Patterson: "The Spooktacular 5k is the funnest 5k race in the area. It is a great combination of festive and fast. Sarah, the race director, does all the things that runners like including accurate timing, a fast course, standard race amenities, fast crowd, and very cool awards. But when you add to that the costume contest and the Thriller dance show before the race, she does some cool and fun things that normal people like. If you haven't run this event, you should."

Weekend Results

There were some notable performances by Limestone County runners over the past week.

ABS Cross Country Invitational
First, on Thursday, Athens Bible School hosted their annual ABS Cross Country invitational race at the Sportsplex in Athens. This event had the largest participation since 2004. Lawrence County won both the Varsity Boys 5k and Varsity Girls 5k overall. In the 1A to 3A division, Hatton won the Varsity Boys 5k and Vina won the Varsity Girls 5k.

Grissom won both the junior boys 2 mile race and junior girls 2 mile race overall. Limestone County's Athens Bible School won both the junior boys 2 mile race and the junior girls 2 mile race in the 1A to 3A division.

In the Varsity Boys 5k 4A to 6A division, Athens High was 3rd, West Limestone was 5th, and East Limestone was 11th. In the Varsity Boys 5k 1A to 3A division, Elkmont was 6th and ABS was 8th. In the Varsity Girls 5k 4A to 6A division, West Limestone was 6th. In the Varsity Girls 5k 1A to 3A division, Elkmont was 5th.

Edgewater 5k
At the inaugural Edgewater 5k in Madison, Ben Greene of Athens won the masters title and took second place overall by running a 19:08. Other Limestone County finishers included Kim Shores of Elkmont in 26:25 and Heath Shores of Elkmont in 27:45. Overall results and Age Group results are available at the HTC website.

Monte Sano XTerra 15k/5k
The Xterra trail race series is gaining in popularity in the Southeast. There are three races in the Alabama series, Cheaha 10k, Monte Sano 15k, and the Oak Mountain 21k. For more information visit http://www.dirtyspokes.com/. The Monte Sano 15k course is a difficult, hilly, technical trail race.

Liz Hurley Ribbon Run 5k 2011

The 8th Annual Lizy Hurley Ribbon Run 5k was held on Saturday October 15th. The race had a huge turnout and registration was cutoff early Friday due to reaching 5,500 registered runners. Donations can still be made at the Liz Hurley webpage through the end of October.

There were a total of 174 women and 56 men from Limestone County. A special congratulations to Dalton Adams for getting first in the 11-14 age group and to Julie Thomason for getting first in the 60-64 age group! Other age group finishers are Melissa Oppman 4th in 30-34 Age group; Kyler Goins 3rd in 15-19 Age group; Andy Davidson 2nd in 20-24 Age group; Eric Patterson 2nd in 35-39 Age group; Ben Greene 2nd in 40-44 Age group; Will Schmieder 5th in 11-14 Age group; Phillip Stewart 5th in 55-59 Age group.

Fleet Feet Monte Sano 15k

The annual Fleet Feet Monte Sano 15k Road Race was Saturday, October 8, 2011. This race is a classic and runs on the roads atop Monte Sano Mountain. It is a beautiful, rolling course through the neighborhoods and portions of the state park. The weather was perfect for racing with temps in the upper 50s and lower 60s. The 15k is an unusual and interesting challenge for runners. This is one of two 15k road races in North Alabama. The other is the Huff -N- Puff on the Bluff in Sheffield in March.

The overall winner was Antoine Batiste of Huntsville in 53:54. The overall female winner was Kathy Youngren of Huntsville in 1:04:15. The masters winner, setting a state record for 53 year old men at the 15k distance, was George DeWitt of Madison in 54:45. The female masters winner was Sheryl Dummer of Huntsville in 1:10:56. Frantic Frog Triathlon

The Frantic Frog Triathlon was held Saturday, September 10, 2011. The distances are 0.25 mile swim, 24k bike ride, and 5k run. The swim is an open water swim and by all accounts, this was a very well organized and well run event.

The 40th Annual Monte Sano 10k and 5k Road Races were Saturday, September 3, 2011. This is an annual Saturday before Labor Day tradition in Huntsville. The races start with a 10k at 8:00 AM and a 5k at 9:30. The 10k course is a double loop of the 5k course. It's a rolling and challenging course. The 10k was the RRCA 10k State Championship race for Alabama this year.

The overall winner was Josh Whitehead of Madison in 33:12. The female winner was Candace Jacobs of Huntsville in 38:45. The masters winner was Tim Horvath of Huntsville in 38:11. The female masters winner was Limestone County's own Whitney Hollingsworth of Elkmont in 46:26. Congratulations to these state champions! Jimmie Dukes 7@7 7k

The first annual Jimmie Dukes 7k run was Saturday, August 27, 2011 at Point Mallard Park in Decatur. 7k is a very unusual distance, 4.36 miles. The course was flat and much of the course was run on the trail that goes along the river. This race had a beat the heat 7 AM start and had a good turnout for an inaugural event.

The overall winner was Limestone County runner Tyrone Harris of Athens in 25:31. It's reported that he hopped out of his car just a couple of minutes before race start time and still dominated the field. The masters winner and second overall was Tim Vinson of Madison in 28:04. The female winner was ultra runner extraordinaire Kathy Youngren of Huntsville in 30:13. The female masters winner was Tina Davis of Town Creek in 34:51. Duck and Run 5k Announcement

I've decided to put a bounty on the Duck and Run 5k course record this year. We already give a cash prize to the mid-pack runner and a random drawing. To make things a little more exciting up front this year, we are going to give a cash prize for setting a course record.

According to my records, the male course record is 16:23 set in 2007 by Tyrone Harris. The female course record is 20:29 and was set in 2008 by Emily Rutherford. I wouldn't consider either of those records soft, but I think that both of those records can be improved. So, let's do it!

Here's how it will work. I have $100 to use for this if we have fewer than 300 runners. If you beat the old record, but someone beats you, I'm sorry, but you didn't set the new course record. So, you must both win and set a record to get the bounty. Since I only have $100 for fewer than 300 runners, if both records fall, then both the new male and new female record holder will get $50.

UPDATE!! If we get 325 or more registered, paid runners, we will give away $100 to both a male and female course record setter! So, don't be shy... Recruit those fast men and women!

So, call your friends and get them to sign up! Call your fast friends and get them to try to get a new course record!

The Big 5k

The Big 5k is a race in Research Park in Huntsville that benefits the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Alabama. Last year's race was cancelled because of a thunderstorm, so I think that made this year the first annual. The course was not marked quite right and ended up being about 5.3k (3.3 miles) instead of 5k.

The winner was Limestone County's own Andy Davidson of Athens! Andy ran the long course in 18:25. The female winner was Taylor Vroman of Murfreesboro, TN, in 21:40. Overall results and Age Group results are available at the HTC website.

The Paint the Streets 5k took place on Saturday July 23rd. The race was created by the family and friends of Carlene Hall, an amazing woman who displayed uncommon faith and courage in the face of a debilitating spinal cord injury, to honor Carlene and enhance spinal cord injury services for others in our community.

June 25 Weekend

It took me a while to notice the results from the area races on June 25. There were two in the area. The Helen Keller Festival 5 Mile in Tuscumbia and the Heel and Crank Duathlon in Huntsville.

Helen Keller Festival 5 Mile
This race is part of an annual event in Tuscumbia, the Helen Keller Festival. The small town of Tuscumbia is really abuzz the morning of the event. There is a car show, some kind of crafts show, live music throughout the day, and the play, The Miracle Worker is at Ivy Green in the evenings. This is not an easy or fast course, and the weather is notoriously hot and humid for this event.

The overall winner was Kyle Suitor of Corinth, MS, with a time of 29:52. The masters winner was Stacey Lemay of Florence in 32:59. The female winner was Elizabeth Barry of Nashville, TN, in 32:02. The female masters winner was Kimberly Burritt of Murphreesboro, TN, in 38:38. Overall results and Age Group results are at the Shoals TRAC website.

Heel and Crank Duathlon

The Heel and Crank Duathlon is a 2.5 mile run, then a 10 mile bike ride, followed by a 2.5 mile run. This event takes place in Huntsville's Cummings Research Park. The event benefits ALS (Lou Gherig's disease) research. The results are available at Team Rocket City Tri Website.

Alabama A&M 10k

I've heard that the Alabama A&M 10k is one of the oldest foot races in Huntsville, but I haven't yet confirmed that. This race almost has a cult following. People love to hate it. It's a tough, slow, hilly course with no shade. It is run on one of the earliest hot days of the year. It has an out and back section and a double loop. The double loop contains one of the steepest road hills in the area. This is not a PR course. But the race has character and it builds character. The 2011 running was very typical. It was hot and humid.

There was a minor modification to the course this year because of construction on the Alabama A&M campus and the new course is certified.

The overall winner was Josh Whitehead of Madison in 32:37. Josh is on fire right now and we are witnessing something special with the race performances he has been able to string together in 2011. He is establishing himself as the top local runner. Donald Bowman of Madison was the masters winner in 37:39. The female winner was Candace Jacobs of Huntsville in 39:40. Eurocross

The annual Huntsville Track Club Eurocross 5k and 8k races were Saturday on the UAH Campus. This is a unique race that includes hurdling hay bales, multiple creek crossings, a short, steep hill, and a short section of trail through trees. It's a combination of steeplechase and cross country. The event is also spectator friendly as spectators are able to see almost all of the course.

Monday May 30th was the 32nd annual Mercedes-Benz Cotton Row Run. The Cotton Row Run included a 10k, 5k & 1 mile fun run. It was a beautiful day but ran a little hot with temperatures reaching the mid 90's. Humidity wasn't as high this year as it was last year.

Jesse Owens 10k

May 21 was a busy day of races! The Jesse Owens 10k got overlooked in the report for the weekend of May 21.

The Jesse Owens 10k is a long standing 10k race in Moulton, AL. The race finishes on the Lawrence County High School track. Heat is usually a factor in the finishing times, and that was likely the case again this year. The week prior to the race saw temperatures as low as the lower 40s while race day reached a high near 90 with high early morning humidity.

Donald Bowman was the overall winner in 36:04 and Emily Spry was the overall female winner in 44:34. The overall results are at the Shoals TRAC website. Limestone County finishers are listed below.

Catching Up

I've had a fairly unbelievable 9-12 months that has made maintaining this blog difficult. It has honestly just fallen off of my plate. I plan to do better at keeping this blog a source of information for Athens-Limestone runners. There are several North Alabama races coming up this spring and summer and hopefully I'll be able to report on them all. Also, this is pretty much a one man project. If you'd like to volunteer to help out from time to time, I sure would accept help to keep this site up to date. Now, back to the purpose of this blog... Let's report on some races for the weekend of May 21, 2011.

Harry Williams All Comers Track Meet
This is an annual event hosted by the Huntsville Track Club. It is free for HTC members who pre-register and very affordable for everyone. It is a family friendly event that has distances that most runners don't get an opportunity to run very often. The event includes a 100 meter race, a 200 meter race, a 400 meter race, an 800 meter race, a one mile race, and a 5 km race. All of the runs take place on the Bob Jones High School Track. The overall results are at the HTC web site. The lone Limestone County participant was 9 year old Gerald Moore of Athens. He ran the 100m in 15.28 seconds, the 200m in 32.54 seconds and the 400m in 79.63 seconds. Very impressive running young man!

Priceville Community Recreation Association 5k
The PCRA 5k took place in Priceville, AL on May 21, 2011. There were a few Limestone County finishers in this race listed below. The overall results are available at the HTC website.

Xterra Oak Mountain Trail Races

The Xterra Oak Mountain 21k (Half Marathon) Trail Race was held at Oak Mountain State Park near Hoover, AL on Saturday, May 21. This is the Xterra Trail Race Southeast Championship. Xterra event results can be found at http://www.xterraplanet.com/xduro/schedule.html. The event included a trail marathon, a trail half marathon, a 10k mud run, and a 5k mud run. The 5k had one Limestone County finisher, Suzanne Rainey in 47:01. The 21k had two Limestone County finishers.

Huff N Puff 15k

The Huff N Puff on the Bluff 15k was Saturday, March 12, 2011 in downtown Sheffield, AL. This is a difficult 15k course. There are some difficult hills, especially on the last half. This race draws a fast crowd from North Alabama at the front.

The overall winner was Josh Whitehead in an amazing and near course record 48:54. The female winner was Sandy Lynch in 1:04:43. The masters winner was Scott Strand in 50:09. The female masters winner was Lori Goldweber in 1:08:08. The overall results and the age group results are at the Shoals TRAC website.

UAH Spring 10K Road Race

The annual Spring 10K Road Race at UAH was Sunday, March 6, 2011 at 2:00 PM. There is some irony in the name of the race today because the conditions were not very spring-like! Temperatures were in the low 40s with a strong breeze from the north under cloudy skies. Brrr!

No Boundaries Training Program

Fleet Feet in Huntsville is offering their first No Boundaries training program in Athens this year! This is a great opportunity to get ready to finish your first 5k.

The goal race for the Athens training program is the Chick Fil A 5k on April 30. The training program kicks off on Monday, February 15. All training runs will be done in Athens. The cost for the training program is $85 and does not include race registration. This is quite a value as the training program includes the following.

The proceeds of this race will help fund a competition track, the first in the Limestone County school system.

Two Marshall County Races

There were two races in Marshall County on Saturday, Nov. 6, 2010. The Skinny Turkey 5k and 10k were in Guntersville. The School House 5k was in Albertville.

Spooktacular 5k

The second annual Spooktacular 5k was Saturday, October 30, 2010 in downtown Huntsville. This race is a combination of a fun run and a competitive 5k. Costumes are encouraged, but the race also draws a very fast and large crowd with 641 finishers. There is an award ceremony for both the costumes and the race. The race kicks off with an entertaining rendition of Michael Jackson's Thriller.

The overall winner was Brandon York of Huntsville in 15:19. The masters winner was Donald Bowman of Madison in 16:59. The female winner was Candace Jacobs of Huntsville in 17:34. The female masters winner was Clarissa Sharp of Huntsville in 21:34. The overall results and the age group results are available at the HTC website.

XTERRA Monte Sano 15k Trail Race

The second annual XTERRA Alabama Monte Sano 15k Trail Race was Sunday, October 24, 2010 at Monte Sano State Park in Huntsville. There was also a 5k trail race, but there were no Limestone County finishers in the 5k. This race is part of a trail racing series that you can learn more about at http://www.dirtyspokes.com/. The other races in the Alabama series are at Cheaha State Park and Oak Mountain State Park. Because it is part of this series, this race draws runners from all over the state.

The 15k course at Monte Sano is a difficult, technical course with at least 3 major climbs. Unlike many other trail races, the distance on this course is an accurate 15k or 9.3 miles. Anything less than a 10 minute per mile average pace is difficult on this course.

The overall winner was Brandon Mader of Huntsville in dominating fashion with a 1:04:25, over 8 minutes ahead of his nearest competitor. The female overall winner, also with a dominant performance, was Limestone County runner Heather Day of Athens in 1:28:28, over 5 minutes ahead of second place. Congratulations Heather! Fleet Feet Monte Sano 15k

The annual Fleet Feet Monte Sano 15k was Saturday, October 9, 2010 at Monte Sano State Park in Huntsville. This race offers a rare opportunity to run the 15k distance on the roads. This is one of two 15k races in North Alabama, and both of those races take place on rolling courses. The temperatures were a little warmer than ideal, but it was still very good weather for racing at the start time.

The overall winner was Brandon York of Huntsville in 50:04. The female winner was Candace Jacobs of Huntsville in 58:37. The masters winner was Donald Bowman of Madison in 54:32. The female masters winner was Gail Dwyer of Madison in 1:10:09. The overall results, age group results, and awards are available at the HTC website.

Elkmont Lions Club Rails to Trails 10k

The annual Elkmont Rails to Trails 10k benefiting the Lions Club was Saturday, September 25, 2010 in Elkmont, AL. Weather was a challenge as rain poured on the runners. This was an added dimension to an already interesting race.

This race starts on the road and ends on the crushed gravel trail. The start is rolling, but mostly downhill and fast. Then, the race turns across a field and the last 3 miles or so are a very gradual, but noticeable, incline. It is a scenic race that is well supported by the community. It is the only 10k race in Limestone County.

The overall winner was Brandon York in 33:09. The female winner was Mary Helen Sanders in 48:02. The masters winner was George DeWitt in 35:58. The female masters winner was Wu Yuling in 48:47. The hometowns are not listed in the results. However, since this was a Limestone County race, reading the results will turn up some familiar names. Monte Sano Five and Dime

The 39th annual Monte Sano 10k and 5k Road Races were held at Monte Sano State Park Saturday, September 4, 2010. This is a long standing event that is part of the HTC Grand Prix series. This race draws a large crowd and the 10k is the first and main event. The 10k starts at 8:00 AM and the men and women start separately in the 5k with the men starting at 9:30 and the women at 9:40.

The 10k race is a double loop of the 5k course. The course can't really be described as fast, but it isn't particularly challenging, either. There are a couple of rolling hills and there is an out and back on a narrow trail that will slow runners down some. There was a very nice break in the heat that was most welcome by the runners! The cooler temps probably made up for the course.

The 10k overall winner was Josh Whitehead of Madison in 33:18, just edging out 2nd place 22 year old Will Rodgers of Huntsville in 33:26. The female winner was Candace Jacobs of Huntsville in 37:18. The masters winner was Donald Bowman in 35:36. The female masters winner was Limestone County's Whitney Hollingsworth of Elkmont in 46:07. Congratulations Whitney! Killen Founders Day 5k

The Killen Founders Day 5k was Saturday, August 28, 2010 in Killen, AL. This annual event usually draws a fast crowd. Several North Alabama Cross Country teams use this race as a fitness test going into the beginning of the Cross Country season, so there are usually lots of younger finishers. I've never attended this event, but the times indicate that it must have been a bit cooler there yesterday morning and that the course must be really fast!

The overall winner was Josh Whitehead of Madison in 15:28. Since David Riddle has moved away, Josh has replaced him as the top North Alabama runner. I expect that he'll continue to improve. The female winner was 13 year old Brandi Fennel of Florence in 23:33. The masters winner was Lance Winders of Mansfield, TN, in 18:00. The female masters winner was Sherea Burns of Florence in 25:04.

HiWAAY Sprint Triathlon

The 30th annual Huntsville HiWAAY Sprint Triathlon was Saturday, August 21, 2010. This race is an interesting triathlon because it is a "reverse" triathlon. Triathlons are usually Swim, Bike, Run. This one is Run, Bike, Swim, avoiding the dreaded "BRICK" (Bike, Run, ICK!). Also, it is a sprint distance (3 mile run, 6 mile bike ride, and 400 meter pool swim) which makes it eminently do-able for the beginning triathlete.

The weather was warm, but not unbearably hot until after the finish of the race. The race starts at the Cross Country Running Park in Huntsville. That is a difficult 3 mile course with one major hill. The race finishes at the Huntsville Natatorium. For more information about the race, visit http://www.hsvsprinttri.hiwaay.net/.

The overall winner was Andrew Hodges of Huntsville. The female winner was Rachel Eubanks of Harvest. The masters winner was John Hill of Bentonville, AR. The female masters winner Clarissa Sharp of Huntsville.

The Eva Bank Midnight Run is an annual event that always draws a big crowd. This Friday evening / Saturday morning was no exception as there were 618 finishers at this event! The event took place in Cullman, AL on Friday evening at 11:59 PM.

The overall winner was E.C. Gibbs in 16:19. The female winner was Alania Norman in 20:28. The masters winner was Jeff Clark in 18:33. The female masters winner was Jo Ann Jetton in 22:14.

The Brooke Hill Run for Awareness 5k was run in old town Decatur on Saturday, August 14, 2010 at 8:00 AM. This race benefits ovarian cancer research and awareness. Scoring services were provided by the River City Runners club. The conditions Saturday morning were very hot and muggy. This race begins and ends at the Carnegie Arts Center in Decatur.

The overall winner was Donald Bowman of Madison in 17:07. The female winner was Lisa Rawlings of Decatur in 21:43. The masters winner was Tim Vinson of Madison in 18:49. The first annual Dog Trot 5k was held in Huntsville on Saturday, August 7, 2010. This race benefits the Greater Huntsville Humane Society and runners were encouraged to bring their best friend along for a fun run / walk after the race, hence the name "Dog Trot".

The annual DaDooRunRun 5k was Saturday, July 24, 2010 in Florence, AL. This race coincides with the annual WC Handy Festival in Florence. The course runs by the UNA campus, through downtown Florence, and has some hills to climb. Runners are rewarded with some very good live blues music post-race.

The inaugural Paint the Streets 5k started at the SAIC Huntsville office in Cummings Research Park in Huntsville on July 24, 2010, at 7:00 AM. This race benefits the United Cerebral Palsy foundation, is in memory of Carlene Hall, and SAIC is the title sponsor. The conditions were HOT and HUMID, even with a 7:00 AM start time. This would be a fast course in cooler weather, but Saturday was a scorcher!

The overall winner was Brad Schroeder of Owens Cross Roads in 17:06. The female winner was Kathy Youngren of Huntsville in 19:48. The masters winner was Donald Bowman of Madison in 17:58.
